UN chief urges warring sides in Syria to abide by UNSC 30-day ceasefire

ISIS ‘far from finished’ as terrorists regroup in Syria
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appealed on the warring sides in Syria to abide by a 30-day ceasefire called for by the UN Security Council.

Addressing a session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Guterres said it's "high time to stop this hell on Earth" in Syria's embattled eastern Ghouta region, ABC news reported on Monday.

Guterres welcomed the UNSC resolution, but added that council resolutions "are only meaningful if they are effectively implemented."

He noted that he expects the "resolution to be immediately implemented and sustained," calling for safe, unimpeded and sustained delivery of humanitarian aid and services, and evacuations of the sick and wounded.

On Saturday, the UN Security Council unanimously approved a resolution demanding a 30-day ceasefire across Syria "without delay" to deliver humanitarian aid to millions and evacuate the critically ill and wounded.
