Barzani adviser accuses Iraq of bringing Iranian experts to Kirkuk

Peshmerga forces

Hemin Hawrami, the advisor of Kurdish President Masoud Barzani, accused Saturday Iraqi forces of hiring Iranian experts to attack Peshmerga forces in northern Kirkuk governorate.

Kurdish Peshmerga forces have destroyed vehicles used by the Iranian militias in Iraq and Syria (IMS) during a ground offensive, Hawrami said on his Twitter account.

He added that the Iraqi forces, backed by Iranian experts, attacked Peshmerga forces by mortar shells.

This comes as the crisis in Kirkuk has escalated. Peshmerga forces have been fending off attacks launched by the Iraqi forces, backed by IMIS, since Sunday night.

Tensions between the two sides over the future of Kurdistan have been high since the Kurds voted for independence in a September referendum.

The oil-rich Kirkuk Governorate has emerged as a flashpoint in the crisis as it is claimed by both sides.
