Peshmerga 'ready to fend off attacks of enemies: Spokesman

Peshmerga forces ready to defend Kurdistan, IMIS provokes forces

Peshmerga forces are ready to defend Kurdistan Region against any enemies trying to attack it, Ministry of Peshmerga spokesman Helgurd Hekmat said Saturday.

He added that the central government in Baghdad has forgotten the sacrifices made by Peshmerga forces to defeat ISIS in most of the Iraqi land.

Up to 2,000 Peshmerga forces have been killed to prevent ISIS from storming Kirkuk, but Baghdad government faced the forces with guns and fires.

Hekmat confirmed that the Peshmerga forces have withdrawn from Erbil-Bagdad disputed areas to prevent bloodshed but the Iranian militias in Iraq and Syria (IMIS) have provoked the forces more than once.

This comes as the crisis in Kirkuk has escalated.

Peshmerga forces have been fending off attacks launched by the Iraqi forces, backed by IMIS, since Sunday night.

Tensions between the two sides over the future of Kurdistan have been high since the Kurds voted for independence in a September referendum.

The oil-rich Kirkuk Governorate has emerged as a flashpoint in the crisis as it is claimed by both sides.
