Iraqi police forces on Saturday broke into the central area of Mosul city, a source told The Baghdad Post.
The forces controlled Halab Street and the preparatory school in Mosul, the source added.
Meanwhile, counterterrorism forces controlled Fathi Al Ali mosque and the cemeteries' area in new Mosul.
The forces are also storming Resalla district, the source further said.
US-backed Iraqi forces have launched a large-scale military operation to dislodge (ISIS) militants from the western half of Mosul city, which has been in the hands of extremists since 2014.
On February 19, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced the start of the operation on state TV, saying government forces were moving to "liberate the people of Mosul from Daesh oppression and terrorism forever", using the Arabic acronym for ISIS.
