Iraqis occupied second place in the highest number of applications for
asylum in Europe during the past year according to a report from
European Asylum Support Office (EASO) reviewed by The Baghdad Post.
EASO said that applications for asylum across EU countries fell by 44% in 2017 compared with the previous year.
A total of 728,470 asylum applications were registered last year, compared to 1.3 million in 2016, the report added.
"2017 was the second year that witnessed a decline in asylum applications," the report said.
It revealed that 1.4 million asylum applications were registered in 2015, and this trend is expected to continue to down in 2018.
The largest percentage of asylum applications during the past year were from Syria (15%), Iraq and Afghanistan (7% and 5%), Nigeria, Pakistan, Eritrea, Albania, Guinea and Iran with varying percentages.
