Commander-in-Chief has visited troops in Iraq and says Australia will stay as
long as we are wanted and needed, News reported on Sunday.
Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove has just finished a secret trip to Baghdad.
Fifteen years ago, as the Chief of the Defence Force under then-Prime Minister John Howard, he led the original mission to topple Saddam Hussein.
About 300 personnel remain in Iraq as part of Task Force Taji to train the Iraqi Security Forces to counter ISIS and rebuild their country.
Sir Peter said no one would have foreseen that Australia would be in the Middle East this long, and that Australia had helped Iraq go from being “war-torn and absolutely wrecked” to where it was today.
Australia is committed to Iraq into the future, he said.
