Turkmen members have called on the Iraqi parliament to dissolve Kirkuk provincial council via an application registered by 150 MPs, MP Hassan Touran, the member of Turkmen Front, said on Sunday.
He added that the outstanding problems of the disputed area of Kirkuk could be solved in case of disintegrating the provincial council.
Touran pointed out that there is a request has been submitted to Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to appoint a temporary Turkmen governor till conducting elections, will be held on May 15th, 2018.
This comes as the crisis in Kirkuk has escalated. Peshmerga forces have been fending off attacks launched by the Iraqi forces, backed by IMIS. Tensions between the two sides over the future of Kurdistan have been high since the Kurds voted for independence in a September referendum. The oil-rich Kirkuk Governorate has emerged as a flashpoint in the crisis as it is claimed by both sides.
