A suicide car bomber blew himself up at a checkpoint on a highway near oilfields in Iraq’s southern province of Basra on Friday, police sources said.
Several people were killed in the blast at the Rumeila checkpoint, including two soldiers and a number of civilians in a bus, the sources said.
Sources added that the toll from the attack may rise due to the bad injuries.
Sources said earlier, as a preliminary toll, two army officers were killed in car bomb explosion at the entrance of Rumeila, Basra.
Security forces blocked the road connecting the provinces of Basra and Dhi Qar in the aftermath of the deadly bombing.
Basra governorate is somewhat stable spot. It has seen less terror bombings compared to other parts in the violence-torn Iraq.
