Iraq's parliament approved on Monday holding the legislative elections on May 12.

The date of the elections was set in conformity with the plans of the Iraqi government and Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al Abadi who seeks to be re-elected for a new term.

The parliament's approval of the date was unanimous.

Some political powers in the country, mostly Sunni and Kurdish, had tried to postpone the elections date in order to allow hundreds of thousands of the displaced to return home to take part in the vote.
