North Korean leader Kim Jong Un says the United States should be aware that his country's nuclear forces are now a reality, not a threat, CNBC reported Monday.
Kim was speaking in his annual New Year's Day address. He said the country had achieved the historic feat of "completing" its nuclear forces and added that the has a "nuclear button" on his desk.
Kim also offered a potential olive branch to South Korea, suggesting he was "open to dialogue".
North Korea may also send a team to the Winter Olympics in Seoul, he said.
The customary New Year's address was broadcast Monday morning on North Korean state television.
North Korea has come under increased criticism and sanctions over the past year because of its nuclear weapons program and repeated testing of conventional missiles.
