Russia will considerably withdraw its forces from Syria, Tass News Agency quoted Chief of General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov as saying.

"Obviously, after military tasks, and there are just a few of them left, are completely fulfilled, the supreme commander-in-chief will take a decision to cut the task force," he said.

When asked about concrete parameters of the reduction, Gersimov said it would "depend on the situation." "But, obviously, it will be a considerable reduction, with only the reconciliation center, two military bases and a number of structures needed to maintain the current state of things being left," he said.

Syria has only just begun to emerge from a devastating civil war that began in early 2011 when the Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad regime cracked down on pro-democracy protests with unexpected ferocity.

Since then, hundreds of thousands of people have been killed in the fighting and more than 10 million displaced, according to the UN.
